What role plays the shaft material?

Anything that relates to a piece of sports equipment – no matter what kind of sports – cannot and must not be treated indifferently. Just as with darts and especially with shafts. The shaft’s length is measured without the thread. That means the indicated length is always equal to the visible part of the shaft, as soon as it’s screwed into the barrel. The shafts are the prolongation of a dart and define its center of gravity. Of course the material choice only makes sense when you know its advantages and disadvantages. The big advantage of aluminium and brass shafts is, that they have a high specific weight and thus are pretty slim, what can only be good for strikes in a miminum area. If they fall to the ground (can happen more often), they mostly get a knock and are partly concorted, what isn’t to be seen at first sight. This modification in the material’s structure cannot be undone any more, the flight of the dart, however, will unavoidably change. The disadvantage of a plastic resp. nylon shaft is, that it is mostly quite thick and thus can deflect following darts more easily from their original target. But its advantage is, that it deforms only elastically when falling down and comes back to its original form in the end. At worst it breaks at the barrel’s end, what in 99.9% of all cases results from a hard ground floor. So make your own decision what kind of shaft is the right one for you, because you have to throw with it in the end! Little tip: A dart mat is basically a purchase that helps to preserve your dart material.

Do shaft rings resp. shaft crowns make sense?

They hold together the slitted segments of your nylon shaft end in order to center and to hold tight your flight and to deter following darts from destroying your shafts and flights.

Does it matter which flight or shaft I use?

The dart will fly with short and long shafts, with small as well as with big flights – no doubt. But to attune your sports equipment optimal to yourself you should test some combinations. Basically, especially to beginners I recommend a bigger flight – the dart’s stabilizer – as it prevents the dart from a sinking of the back part and carries the dart wide with a low strain.
